Our Award-Winning Chairman – the citation
Further to the recent news of Ian’s amazing award from the LTA Essex team, we thought we would publish the citation which detailed in writing all the value that Ian adds to our club. Enjoy:
In what ways has the volunteer contributed in 2019 (150 words)
Affectionately known as ‘The Chairman’ and ‘Shoreditch Ian’, Ian Gunn has been a constant, consistent and permanent presence in the ever-growing success of Hutton and Shenfield Lawn Tennis Club throughout 2019. Elected as Chairman in 2014, Ian has committed incomprehensible hours to his position with as much enthusiasm and commitment as if it was a lifelong, fully-paid role. His level of enthusiasm, energy and positive discipline have meant that the club has continued to grow on all fronts.
Not only does Ian dive headlong into the responsibilities of his role but he is the first to attend social events and it’s various tournaments, making sure of an inclusive atmosphere so that members are well-represented in their views and opportunities to play to all standards. He is the ideal role-model and has instigated an active, approachable and energetic committee with the voice of the members at it’s heart.
What did the volunteer achieve in 2019 (150 words)
In a period where many local clubs have seen memberships drop, Ian’s leadership has stabilised and increased adult membership to 190. Working closely with the Head Coach and supporting coaches, he has overseen the junior programme rise as well as junior member success across a raft of county events.
Furthermore, in partnership with Mens and Ladies Team Captains, he has helped sustain, 17 teams across Mens, Ladies, Mixed, Vets and Essex League competitions, rivalling clubs with far greater membership numbers. His promotion of fund raising has led to numerous events for a number of charitable causes.
However, his most remarkable achievement is often hidden from the public eye and in the current economic climate, Ian has ensured our club is sustainable and able to maintain the highest quality of facilities whilst being thoroughly inclusive to the local community.
How has the volunteer shown any of the following: teamwork; leadership skills; consideration of diversity; inclusion and safeguarding (100 words)
By default, a Chairman is expected to lead ‘effectively’. For Ian, ’by example’ is the minimum. He goes above and beyond to turn a ‘volunteer’ role into mission to drive the club onto increased success. He is a fountain of knowledge in safeguarding and has helped develop an incredibly safe platform for junior success.
This is always achieved without alienation, representing every niche of membership in friendly tournaments, social play, coaching opportunities, match-play and social events. Although social play is a staple of any club, Ian has helped create a club community that we are truly proud of.
Have you any additional information to support your nomination? (100 words)
Ian’s leadership has converted a club that has ‘ticked along’ into one that is forward thinking, forward planning and wholly inclusive. Ian is well-known at Hutton and Shenfield, not because he is self-promoting but because his positive and active reputation proceeds him.
Committee membership and active roles in supporting the club are not a chore. He has promoted and shared a vision that is so positive, members cannot help but be onboard. He has turned our club into one we are very proud of and in doing so, we are extremely proud to call him ‘The Chairman’.
